Last year I ran across a sunflower field south of where we live. Unfortunatley they were past their blooming stage. I've been looking for one this year so I can get some pictures of the blooming. A friend of ours said he spotted one right on the hwy that I travel to and from work on everyday. Lucky me!!! I stopped the other night on my way home. It looks like a whole field full of happy faces to me. Call me crazy.

Found these while riding through Loess Hills on the scenic byway Friday. When we saw the geese I was really after the Great Blue Heron that we had seen as we were crossing a bridge over a waterway. They must have excellent hearing or eyesight because it was gone before we even crossed the road. We saw several more as we walked closer to where the geese were but they just kept moving on down the waterway. Eventually the geese also took flight but they came in our direction and I was able to get a couple shots of them flying by.

I got a second chance at photographing a Great Blue Heron. We were on a poker run Sat. for a benefit for a friend. It started out in Fairbury and one of the stops was back in Beatrice. When we came over the west side bridge, to my total amazment I saw a Great Blue Heron just standing there in the water. WHAT!!! Here I have been looking all over the place when we are out and about for one and there one is, maybe less than a mile from my house.
Well, after we got the bike parked, one block away from the bridge, I told Larry to go on in and pick my card, that I would be down at the river trying to get a picture of that bird. My first trip down I was going to crawl down under the bridge and try to get as close as possible. Well, It was quite a step slide down the concrete slab and I didn't think I could get back up so I opted for shooting from atop the bridge. I took a few shots, then the battery ran out. I also did not have my teleconverter on the camera. Luckily I had all that back at the bike. So off I went to get another battery and the teleconverter.
Upon my second trip to the bridge I notice that the Heron had moved a little closer. I was really excited to see that. I hurried and got everthing set up on my camera and started to shoot. I got some ok shots but still not the greatest. I totally forgot I had my polarizer in my bag too so the shots were a little difficult because of the glare from the water. It was really fun to watch this bird fish. It did what looked like some dance moves then plunked it's whole head into the water and speared a fish. Unfortunatley right as it did that, I was trying to make adjustments to my settings. AHHHHH! In a flash he was in the air and off to the other side of the river.
I will be making more trips down there now that I know where this bird hangs out. Hopefully it will be there still. I also spotted another one not too far south of town on a farm pond while we were on our return trip home from the benefit ride. I will be checking that one out too.

On our way home from Louisville this past Sunday we saw some wild turkeys on the side of the road and then came across a Great Blue Heron in a farm pond. Of course I made Larry turn around so I could try and get some pictures. The turkeys were pretty easy. The Heron on the other hand was another story. As soon as I started down the ditch to get closer, it took off. The pictures are horrible of the Heron but I wanted to post them anyway just to prove that I acutally did see one. I've been keeping my eyes peeled all summer for them, this is the first one I've seen in person.
We went for a motorcycle ride this past Sunday and ended up at Heron Bay in Lewiston. It is a little dive bar but they have good food and it is just a good place to go and relax. They are right on the Platte river. There is a two level patio where you can sit outside right next to the water. Some of the people that live on or vacation on the river have air boats. When the water is down low enough it creates a sandy beach just a few steps away from the patio. They just ride up in their boats and park on the beach.
If you ever want a place to go on a Sunday afternoon check this place out. During the summer on Sunday's they have a 3 pc. band that plays bluesy type music. Get there early, they get busy fast. Place your food order early.

All kinds of creatures showing up in the yard now. The mantis was not too happy to have it's picture taken. I got a damselfly that sat still long enough for a picture, not a very good one but I finally got one. It probably doesn't help that one out of the three cats is usually tagging along when I'm outside chasing things away.
